A Simple Act of Kindness That I’ll Never Forget
One late evening, a neighbor stopped by our house to let me know that I had forgotten to close the garage door. She said she noticed it because leaving our garage door open was out of the ordinary for us.
It may have seemed like a small gesture, but her decision to stop that evening came at a time when I needed kindness more than she could have known.
I thanked her and explained that it had been a very difficult week. My dad’s health was failing after a severe ear infection had spread into the ear bone, and I was desperately trying to find a long-term care facility that could meet his needs and accept his VA benefits. I was overwhelmed and unsure where to turn.
As we talked, she mentioned that she and her husband had a business helping families navigate the financial challenges of finding care for elderly loved ones. They understood how complicated and emotional the process could be, and they offered to help.
That simple conversation at my front door changed everything.
Through their kindness, knowledge, and willingness to step in, they helped me find the right place for my dad. It became the place where he spent the final week of his life.
I will never forget what they did for me and my family during such a difficult time. What began with a neighbor noticing an open garage door grew into an incredible act of kindness—and eventually, a beautiful friendship.
When Grace & Space™ began taking shape, they were among the very first people I thought of. I wanted them to know that their kindness mattered and that it had stayed with me.
So I presented each of them with a Grace & Space shirt as a small way of saying thank you.

The shirts could never repay what they gave me. They simply represent something I hope Grace & Space will always stand for: recognizing the people who show up, offer grace, make room for others, and choose kindness—sometimes without ever realizing how much their actions can change someone’s life.
Kindness doesn't have to be grand to make a difference. Sometimes it begins with something as simple as noticing an open garage door.
With grace,Cheryl A.
